Unity Church

Unity, The Unity School of Christianity, and Unity Church

Unity Church was founded in 1889 by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore

Unity is one of the largest of the New Thought Movements Religious organizations with over 900 Churches worldwide. Because of its enormous size and age it has many organizations within it including the Association of Unity Churches International. Unity as a whole offers no particular creed, no set dogma, and no required ritual. Instead, the Unity School of Christianity sees good in every every religion that is filling someone’s needs. Unity’s position holds that one should focus on the good which is pervasive in the world. From the perspective of Unity teachings, God is understood as spiritual energy which is everywhere present, and available to all people. Unity teaches that we are all children of God, and salvation, is found in the understanding of one’s innate divinity in everyday life.

A Brief History of Unity:

Unity was founded in 1889 in Kansas City, Missouri, by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore. After Mrs. Fillmore’s remarkable healing using prayer and affirmations, many friends became interested in how she accomplished this healing. Unity grew from small prayer circles in living rooms to the worldwide movement it is today.

Unity Mission

From Unity:“Through prayer, publishing, and spiritual education, we support people in realizing and expressing their divine potential for healthy, prosperous and meaningful lives.” From the Association of Unity Churches International: Centered in God, we co-create a world that works for all.

Unity Vision

From Unity:“The world’s premier provider of spiritual resources and the destination of choice for personal transformation.” From the Association of Unity Churches International: “We create and support vibrant, diverse, spiritual leaders and communities that foster transformation and inspire people to make a positive difference in our world.”

Core Beliefs:

  • 1) God is the source and creator of all. There is no other enduring power. God is good and present everywhere.

  • 2) We are spiritual beings, created in God’s image. The spirit of God lives within each person; therefore, all people are inherently good.
  • 3) We create our life experiences through our way of thinking.
  • 4) There is power in affirmative prayer, which we believe increases our connection to God. 5) Knowledge of these spiritual principles is not enough. We must live them.

Official Unity Public Statement:
