New Thought Christianity: Where Superstition, Mythology, Science and Philosophy Collide

Without a doubt, this is one of the most entertaining of all the topics you’ll find within the whole new Thought Genre. It delights and amusing me to no end. No doubt this essay will offend some, amuse others, and may even get a few people thinking…

New Thought and Christianity mix together about as well as Christianity and everything else. What’s important to realize is that the fundamental principles of the entire New Thought Movement predate Christianity, even the old testament by many thousands of years. Many scholars call these lessons The Hermetic Wisdoms, but even that is misleading because Hermes is a name attributed to the Thoout wisdoms predating the name Hermes by many thousands of years…

If you don’t catch the humor in the fact that ‘New Thought’ is essentially the teachings of 5,000 year old Egyptian god named ‘Thoout’ then read slower please, some of the delight in all this may be slipping right by you…

Where was I? oh yes, New Thought Christianity… The New Thought Movement is a massive international resurgence in the conveyance of ancient Egyptian lessons first attributed to Thoout.

But, around 30bce, the Roman Emperors Caligulous and Nero began the wholesale executions of anyone caught spreading these wisdoms (Can you imagine it? These early new Thoughters were teaching that Slaves had Human rights!)… No no no… it just wouldn’t do…

Along came Christ, teaching, yes you guessed, the same Hermetic lessons. Viola! Every movement is more delightful with a figurehead, sprinkle in some resurrection and deification and you’ve got the underpinnings for a whole new religion!

Oddly enough, Thoout’s student Osiris was also executed and resurrected 3 days later… about 3,500 years before Christ did it…

Same teachings, same story, new name.

The New thought Movement however has become far more associated with Christianity than it’s Egyptian Underpinnings. A delightfully odd convergence evidenced everywhere in the movement.

You see, Thoout was a deity associated with Spiritual Unity and Scientific prowess. But again, to be clear, just saying his name was punishable by death in Europe from 40b.c.e to about 1930c.e. (Hitler executed 200,000 Hermetics, and in some parts of the middle east it is still punishable by deathy – Equality and goodness are very threatening ideas to Dictators, Fascists, and Monarchs). So, what better thing to do than change the name, but not the lessons!

Massive in the New Thought Christian Movement is “Unity School of Practical Christianity.”, whose founders Charles and Myrtle Fillmore chose the ancient Egyptian winged disc as the symbol to represent Unity and symbolize the “Earth being lifted in consciousness.” Today the “school” is a centralized group with churches in many areas. They distribute millions of pieces of literature a year; their most popular publications (with a total circulation of about three million) are Unity Magazine (articles on metaphysical topics) and Daily Word (their daily devotional magazine). They have over 500 churches and/or study groups in America, with an additional 100 or so congregations and study groups in 15 foreign countries.

All these, New Thought Christians praying under the symbol of an Egyptian god… An interesting note, in Egyptian Mythology which the Fillmore’s were very well versed, the winged disc is the symbol of Horus, a diety alongside of Thoout who was said to be Thoout’s student in the ways of knowledge…

Now let’s get a lovely little distinction here, Unity Christianity (New Thought Christianity) is a bit different than normal Christianity: Unity teaches that Christ is an idea, the essence of “divine Mind.” They say that every person is potentially perfect, and that Jesus expressed that perfection, and while we are still only working toward it, we are part of the divine universal consciousness, and therefore, divine by nature. We must discover the Christ principles of successful living and then be ready to apply them to our own daily living. In summary, rather than viewing Jesus as the Savior from our sins, Unity views Him as merely the “Way Shower.”

With the Unity concept of the power of positive thinking, there is no talk about sin, and therefore, no eternal hell and no eternal punishment, but instead beleive that both heaven and hell are “states of mind,” not geographical locations, that people experience as a result of their thoughts, words, and deeds.

There are many other New thought Christian groups out there including Religious Science, Church of Christ, Scientists, and Christian Science, to name just a few…

So diverse are they, that any effort to concisely describe them all here would simply be superfluous… It cornerstone of this essay is the understanding that New Thought Core principles are the same principles taught over 5,000 years ago by Toouht and 2,000 years ago by Jesus the Christ…

The lessons, the mythology, the legends are nearly identical in both of these great teachers. However, when studying one (Toouht) has been punishable by death for over 2,000 years (still is in some parts of the world), it is easy to see how a Winged Disc of Horus renamed “Unity Church of Christ” would become a more desirable dissemination mechanism…

Of course, this subterfuge has created a HIGH degree of dogmatic proprietorship, riff within the New Thought Movement.

Fortunately, this tireless debate about New Thought Christianity shifts the focus away from the core principles themselves and ensures the turth’s keep trickling their way into the society safely…

Note: That’s a complex idea, let me clarify. The Core Principle “There is a all pervasive force of goodness underlying and underpinning all things” is a very important principle for the people of the world. It is exceedingly empowering to think this way… It is also true, which makes it even better.

Whenever someone adds a bit of dogma to that idea, it convolutes it, dilutes it if you will. That dogma then becomes the grounds for contention. This contentiousness keeps the core principle safe from ever becoming a cult… You see, as long as organizations like Unity and Christ Scientist continue to argue over principles and dogma, the core principles will continue to trickle into the collective mind, while the contested principles will continue to stay out…

All told, it is a delightfully entertaining way to spread consciousness…

I leave you with this delightful quote from an Invitation to a Science of the Mind Gathering:

“Science of Mind in its broadest and truest sense includes the best in science, religion, and philosophy.”

Does anybody else see the irony inherent in that sentence? Or is it just me?

Well I for one feel relieved that finally, after thousands of years, someone has finally created the ‘best’ religion for us all to follow. I wonder why no-one else ever thought of creating the “One true Faith” or “Best Religion” before now?

Author’s Note: Okay, just in case my sarcasm went right by you, let me make a few things clear about this essay. First: New Thought Principles in their very nature are inclusive, meaning that if you accept the idea that there is an all pervasive force of goodness running through the world, then that, by its very definition means “All Pervasive”… So it includes everyone everywhere. Second: The very notion of the ‘Best’ religion is so very tired and overdone… Isn’t every religion the best one for the person practicing it? That’s why I’m being a bit sarcastic in this essay, because the two ideas simply don’t mesh up… “It’s all pervasive, but ours is best” is really an absurd idea…

Lastly, please don’t mistake my gentle jabs as being in any way hostile, I just find the whole premise very amusing… I mean really, taking a set of 5,000 year old Egyptian concepts, then worshiping under the central image of an Egyptian Diety, then calling it Christianity sounds more like repakaging the same product under a different name to me… The funny part is, it’s being repackaged under the name of a product that already exists!!! I guess to really understand this, you can imagine if “Pepsi” renamed it’s soda “Coke”… It’s still just Pepsi with a different name folks…
